The foundation of the Institute of Scottish Historical Research in 2007 is a major initiative and focus for research into Scotland’s past at the University of St Andrews. The Institute draws together the excellence and expertise of nearly a dozen historians of Scotland and the Scots at St Andrews and benefits from the support of Prof. T.C. Smout, the Historiographer Royal for Scotland.
The Institute provides an intellectual and a social focus for staff, as well as the thriving community of postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers working on any period of Scottish History from the early Middle Ages to the present.
The Institute hosts several workshops and conferences each year as well as holding a lively fortnightly research seminar, attracting speakers from all over the world, with an emphasis on new discoveries and directions in historical enquiry. Under the Institute’s auspices are two major research initiatives, the Scottish Parliament Project and the History of the University Project.
