The Centre aims to promote the study of Russia, the former Soviet Union, and Central and Eastern Europe by bringing together staff and students from different academic disciplineswith interests in this field. The Centre was founded in 1990, building on a strong tradition of Russian and Central and Eastern European Studies at the University of St Andrews. The teaching of Russian commenced in 1963 and the first lectureships in Economics, in Geography and in History of Central and Eastern Europe were created shortly afterwards. More recently, appointments of Central and Eastern European specialists have been made in the fields of Art History and Politics and International Relations.
