The St. Andrews Centre for Advanced Materials (StACAM) provides a multi-disciplinary environment, which fosters collaboration between chemists and physicists working together on major strategic problems in materials science. International experience has shown that having the focus of a centre significantly enables such materials research and this has been a strong motivating force behind the establishment of StACAM.

The activities of our Centre differ from those of many other UK centres in that StACAM concentrates on inorganic extended arrays rather than molecular solids. The Centre's mission is to synthesise, characterise and ultimately optimise inorganic solids of strategic importance. Taken together, we have a unique portfolio in solid state research which encompasses energy related materials (for batteries and fuel cells), microporous solids (for catalysis), magnetic materials (for information storage), and optoelectronic materials (quantum dots).
